Can a good-looking bottom look any better than it does in a really nice pair of jodhpurs? Forget Spanx and all that body-shaping stuff, a really expensive pair of jods can do wonders.
Of course, it's a chicken-and-egg thing. If you own a serious pair of jods then you are almost certainly a proper horse-rider and riding is a great work-out for the seat.
Personally, I'm a not quite a "proper horse-rider". Serious riders are active all year round, but for me it's autumn and horse-riding that go together.
When the weather gets wintry I tend to lose interest and would rather stay in the warm. And in spring and summer I've got other things to do.
So, this is the time to get my jodhpurs out and find out if I can fit into them. They should fit like a glove.
Today was the day to find out and it quickly became apparent that either they've shrunk, or I've got bigger. Tight is good, but the button and zip has to do up.
I better lose a pound or two. In the meantime I need to buy a pair in a slightly larger size.
The stats on this blog tell me that there's a strong interest in jods out there. They obviously do it for some people pretty intensely because one post is never out of this blog's top five posts.
I find that a little puzzling. Where do jods fit into sexual politics? As I've said before, for me there's a very strong link between the whole horse-
riding thing and my sexual self. For a start, riding often involves a pupil-teacher relationship between novice and instructor and as I never get beyond novice I'm often being told-off.
There's also the
power and control thing that happens around horses. But I think that for me most of the buzz comes from the gear.
The formality of traditional
British riding gear harks back to a more disciplined time plus - of course - there's a focus on saddles, seats and bottoms. As a spanko a bit of a thrill goes through me when my instructor tells me to sit up straight and push my bum down and out!
Also, when I have jods on I feel very self-conscious about how they display my bum. I know its a bit too big, but jods feel like I'm doing a Kim Kardashian (asking the world to look, and keeping looking).
That feeling of display feels naughty and naughty = deserving of punishment, doesn't it?
Add all that together and it's no surprise that when I'm out on a ride I find it hard to think lofty thoughts about the beauty of the countryside. I'm usually day-dreaming my way into a TTWD sort of headspace. But I don't seem to find much of the way I feel about jods in the world of porn. There's the ponygirl stuff, which is a mystery to me; I have no desire to wear a tail.
And there are jodhpur-wearing dominatrices, which don't do it either. Maybe I'm in a minority of one on this one.
PS, language note: does the word ' jodhpurs' get used in US English? Or would it be 'breeches' instead?
The passing thoughts of a full-time writer with a fascination for history, geography, literature, art and an unhealthy(?)interest in all things spanking.

Horsing around
One of my 2013 resolutions is to do more riding. I was talking with SO about it this morning and we're going to make it part of our get fit regime.
Then I logged on here and found that search terms over the last day include 'equestrian porn jodhpurs' and 'ladies in jodhpurs and spanking'. Which reminds me that my interest in all things equine is not entirely unconnected to SQ.
As it happens I went to the saddlery yesterday to buy a turnout rug (a coat for a horse) for one of our ponies and was looking at jods. Time was when you could only get black, blue or stone colour, but now the choice is wonderful and some of the colours and designs are crazy.
I particularly like the design that has a seat and inner thigh panel that's a different colour. But for me there's a couple of problems in the brighter, breezier designs; firstly, I think they're a bit young for me - I worry that I'd be mutton dressed as lamb, and there's also the skill issue.
Bright pink or blue jods catch the eye, but if your riding is a bit rubbish - as mine is - then that's not a great thing. You'd rather blend in a bit more.
Anyway, the way jods (of any colour) cling to your bottom is a wonderful and erotic thing. It's something that I think the fabulous Pandora Blake seems to understand as her work often features horsey gear.
I love it all and for a spanko it immediately puts you in 'that' frame of mind. Add in riding whips, lots of leather and the saddle-soreness that comes with a long ride and the riding-spanko connection is a heady thing. Perhaps I could find a pair of pale pink jods with a vivid scarlet seat as a celebration of the sport's spanko heart.

Book Club: Saddled Up
'Some girls need to be spanked.' Can't argue with that, can I? 'I need to be spanked anyway, not often, but just occasionally.'
And I'm not going to argue with that either, although sometimes it's a bit too occasional from where I'm sitting. With those opening couple of sentences 'Saddled Up' had me gripped, because it could have been me speaking.
And reading on I felt a real connection with the the novel's 'leading lady' Amber Oakley. Later she says 'All my life I've fought against that need, but never managed to conquer it', and again I know where she's at.
Mind you, what follows doesn't seem to involve much fighting against that need and a fair bit of giving in to it it.
Their story has lots of humour, but when it gets to the spanky bits it was, for me, seriously sexy. Of course, the horse-riding aspect of Amber's life is the thing that caught my eye, although her interest in equitation goes beyond the normal confines of jodhpurs, bits and bridles and takes in ponygirl play too.
Actually, I suspect bits and bridles are involved in the ponygirl thing too, especially naughty bits. But I digress, personally my horsey interest is of purely vanilla, so the pony stuff left me a bit cold.
'Saddled Up' touches on one or two non-spank kinks along the way and that does mean that it has a bit of a Quality Street problem. You know, your tin of sweets has plenty to love - but inevitably there's something in there that just isn't your thing at all.
Unavoidable, I suppose, if you're not creating something that is strictly for the spanko community. It does raise a question: how narrowly niche should an erotic novel be? .
For all of that, when 'Saddled Up' was in spanko country it did have lots and lots that I found very sweet indeed. It's one of a series of novels that feature Ms Oakley and I'm going to look out the others - I feel like Amber and I are on the same wavelength.

Connections - horses, jodhpurs and spanking
Perfect sunny winter's day here today, just right for a hack (for our non-UK friends, that's Brit equestrian speak for a gentle horse ride through the countryside). Sadly I have work to do, so today a ride is out of the question.
But I find myself sitting here thinking about what my interest in riding is really all about. I'm not a horsey obsessive like some people I know, but have done some riding for as long as I can remember.
Yes, it's a great sport, exciting at times too, but for me there's also a very strong link between the whole riding thing and my sexual self. It's all very sexy.
No, I don't fancy horses! But there's a power and control thing that happens around them that does put me in that frame of mind. For a start, I like the gear. The way that a well-cut pair of jods hold your bottom is something else and they look great too (on the right backside).
A well-shaped bottom in jods cries out to be smacked, doesn't it? Then there's the formality of traditional British riding gear, which harks back to a more disciplined time. Plus a bit of a class thing too - it's hard not to look a bit haughty when you're in the saddle of a horse.
Add to that the pupil/teacher relationship and it becomes a heady brew. I've had lots of riding tuition over the years too, which tends to call to my spanko self ever so clearly - the tutor's firm voice, curt commands etc.
And, of course, there's all the leather, the riding crops and the straps and belts... Long before I first read Jilly Cooper's 'Riders' in the mid-1980s I was getting all hot under the collar (and tie) about stable-related sex, but afterwards I became convinced that the equestrian community has a much very high number of spankos per head than than the wider community. Or at least I'd like to think so.
PS Just after I posted the above I came across a Zille Defeu post on the subject of joddies. Seems kinky minds think alike. Zille and Pandora look great, though I'm not sure Pandora's boots are quite right for a hack out.
